Tumuaki | Principal – Kura Toa
Shape future pathways
Lead with purpose
Build something enduring
Kura Toa is an expression of Ngāti Toa Rangatira aspiration and leadership in education. Grounded in tikanga and identity, and designed for the future, this kura is part of a long term commitment to reshape pathways for tamariki and rangatahi.
With a personalised, bilingual learning model, a Mauri Ora wellbeing framework, and strong support through Te Puna Mātauranga and Te Pikau o te Rangi, Kura Toa connects learning, identity and real world opportunity.
It is a place where rangatahi are coached into their futures, not fitted into a system.
The role
The Tumuaki is the founding educational leader, responsible for bringing this vision to life in partnership with Ngāti Toa.
This includes establishing the kura for opening, shaping culture and systems, and leading a distinctive learning rhythm where mornings focus on knowledge, afternoons on application, and Fridays on applied hauora through Mauri Ora.
It is a role that sits at the intersection of kaupapa Māori, rich curriculum, and innovative delivery, with accountability for meaningful outcomes for rangatahi, whānau and iwi. You will be supported to be bold, and to help shape what success looks like in this space.
Who you are
You will be a credible and experienced education leader, with a strong grounding in teaching and learning, and the ability to lead people through complexity, ambiguity and growth.
Importantly, while alignment to te ao Māori and the kaupapa of Kura Toa is essential, you do not need to come from a Māori medium background. What matters is your willingness to engage, learn, and build alongside Ngāti Toa with authenticity and respect.
You will bring curiosity, courage and care, along with the presence to build trust with whānau, community and governance. Above all, you will see the potential in every learner and be driven to create an environment where they can truly thrive.
Next Steps?
To apply for this vacancy, you MUST be a New Zealand citizen, resident, or have already secured the right to work in New Zealand and therefore hold a valid visa.
At the appropriate stage we will request your references, we ask that you do not include them on your CV when applying.
