Family Start Worker
Te Kupenga Hauora Ahuriri
Social Work / Teaching / Nursing or Related Field
Step out into the community, and put your Social Work / Teaching / Nursing or related skills to the best possible use – keeping families and children safe.
If life behind a desk isn't for you, and you're after a role where you can work directly in the community, you could be the newest Family Start Worker at Te Kupenga Hauora - Ahuriri.
Te Kupenga Hauora - Ahuriri provides independent healthcare and social services to families in Napier and Hawke's Bay from a Kaupapa Maori perspective. The Family Start programme is a free service covering Napier City that supports whanau in their homes as they raise young children, with the aim of improving a family's circumstances for the benefit of the parents and children. You'll visit families weekly to deliver the programme and to make follow-up checks on how they're going.
You'll need to be a realistic and resilient person to succeed in this role. These are families who face significant and serious challenges, and you'll need to be able to gain their trust and get them on board. There's a fine balancing act between connecting with families, making them feel valued and respected and knowing when they need to be referred on.
A Level 7 Diploma or Degree qualification in a discipline relevant to working with children and their families/whānau (eg Social Work / Teaching / Nursing degree) is compulsory, as well as experience in community work and in building good relationships with support agencies and families.
It's certainly not the easiest role, but you'll have a small, supportive and diverse team to work with, and when things go well you'll get the very real satisfaction of helping turn lives around. You'll be giving help where it's really needed, and working to help keep babies and children safe.
