Te Taura Whiri creates the conditions in Aotearoa for all New Zealanders to celebrate and enjoy te reo Māori as part of our national identity – everywhere, every way, and every day.

Join the Māori language movement and be part of the future you want to see for te reo Māori.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Principal Communications Advisor to join our Communications and Promotions team - Te Toko Reo.

Te Toko Reo is the voice of Te Taura Whiri – the team leads, promotes, supports, creates and engages across a range of kaupapa. This includes strategic communications, delivering key events, driving engaging digital platforms and connecting across Te Whare o te Reo Mauriora.

This role is offered on a fixed term basis for six months.

About You

You’ll have at least seven years of experience working in communications or similar roles.

Speaking and writing in te reo Māori is essential for this role – you do not have to be expert or fluent level, but you need to be more than a beginner.

You will:

  • take pride in your work and have attention to detail
  • enjoy working to deadlines on quality, accurate communications
  • have clever solutions and want to get the job done right the first time
  • occasionallly be able to work outside of normal working hours, especially during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (September 2025).
  • enjoy being part of a team focused on a kaupapa everyone is working towards
  • Use your experience to shape solutions to our more gnarly communications challenges
  • Coach and mentor others

What we offer

A kaupapa Māori work environment that is a safe space for you to use and expand your reo Māori.

We are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, so if you are excited about this role but your experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway.

Salary band $95,000 - $125,000 depending on experience plus KiwiSaver and te reo Māori allowance based on Level Finder Examination.

To be considered for this role you must have a legal right to work in New Zealand
