About us

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is the national agency for place-based heritage in Aotearoa. We celebrate, research, care for, and assist communities to recognise and protect these places for the benefit of future generations.

For over twenty years, our Māori Heritage Team has been working with whānau, marae, hapū, and iwi to identify, conserve, and protect our taonga places.

About the role

We are looking for a new team member that can provide advice and support in relation to Māori heritage policy matters, our ongoing Treaty settlement relationships with iwi, and drafting submissions to public bodies advocating for Māori heritage protection.

The role also supports the work of the Tautiaki Taonga me Kaupapa Māori directorate in the provision of advice and support to iwi and hapū in preservation and revitalisation of Māori built heritage, and research contributing towards the recognition of Wāhi Tapu and Wāhi Tūpuna on the Rārangi Kōrero Heritage New Zealand List.

Your skills and expertise could be from a Māori resource management and environmental planning background, policy work in central or local government, iwi engagement work, or Māori history. All these specialist areas are critical to helping us achieve improved heritage outcomes for Māori and for Aotearoa New Zealand more generally. 

About you

Your knowledge and experience that will see you succeed in this role:

  • Ability to articulate a Māori world view and apply it to the work of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga 
  • Your ability to advance and promote Māori values and principles in a heritage context, and heritage values in a kaupapa Māori context.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles.
  • Experience developing and maintaining networks, credibility, and relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi and other hapori Māori. 
  • Experience working with Māori communities.
  • Experience interacting with and providing advice to senior decision makers in written and oral form.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mātauranga, tikanga and Te Ao Māori, and a keen appreciation of the local circumstances.
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field.
