Ko wai mātou | Who we are

Community Law Centres Aotearoa (CLCA) represents 24 Community Law Centres throughout Aotearoa, supporting access to justice for those with unmet legal needs.  We are a membership-based organisation that affirms and adheres to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  Our new governance arrangements mean that the board makes decisions with our Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti Caucuses.

Te tūranga | The opportunity

This is a pivotal moment as we implement our new constitution and pilot Kaupapa Māori Legal Services across Aotearoa.  We are seeking to improve access to justice for Tangata Whenua, challenging current systemic approaches.

As Tumu Māori, you will lead our Kaupapa Māori Legal Services initiative, working directly with the CEO and maintaining a key relationship with Tangata Whenua Caucus.  You'll bridge organisational requirements with the broader aspirational goals of our movement, while managing two National Coordinators.

Ngā mahi | Key responsibilities

  • Drive the development of Kaupapa Māori Legal Services in partnership with our CLCs
  • Lead and manage National Coordinators
  • Build strong relationships with iwi and Māori organisations at a national level
  • Promote te reo me ngā tikanga throughout the CLC network
  • Be an advocate and champion for our kaupapa and movement
  • Provide support and advice to our new governance bodies
  • Support the movement to implement our commitment to Te Tiriti

He pūkenga, he wheako | Skills and experience

We are seeking candidates who have a mix of project management, stakeholder engagement and communications expertise, as well as a genuine commitment to the work of the CLCs.  In particular, we will be looking for:

  • Demonstrable Māori cultural competence including conversational proficiency in te reo.
  • Strong relationship building skills at all levels, be that government agencies, iwi/hapū, or community settings.
  • Ability to navigate complex organisational dynamics and political landscapes.
  • A track record of delivery and project management.
  • Service delivery experience.
  • Experience working as part of an executive reporting to a board.
  • Advocacy and media engagement skills.
  • While legal skills are not required, an understanding of the justice system, community law, and issues affecting Māori would be an advantage.

Ngā uara | Our values

You will be guided by our core values of:

  • Whakaute (respect - we care, listen and treat everyone fairly)
  • Whakamana (support - we help and encourage people to exercise their rights)
  • Mahi tahi (collaboration - we work together for a fair and just Aotearoa)
  • Ngaio (professional - we are consistent and reliable in the quality of work and expertise we offer).

CLCA is committed to supporting our 24 member CLCs in meeting the unmet legal needs of their communities.  In carrying out all our functions, we affirm and adhere to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

This position can be based either as work-from-home or hybrid.  It is a full-time role with some flexibility for the right person.  Travel throughout Aotearoa will be required.  There are 24 CLC offices across the motu.
