About the Role

Hoani Waititi Marae is seeking a passionate and dedicated Kaiako to support at-risk rangatahi through a kaupapa Māori education programme. This role is perfect for a Registered Teacher or experienced facilitator who is committed to empowering rangatahi to achieve their educational and employment aspirations within a marae-based learning environment.

As a Kaiako working with our rangatahi, you will develop learning pathways, provide one-on-one and group-based support, and foster an engaging environment that integrates education with employment readiness. This role requires a strong understanding of Māori pedagogy, workforce trends, and local networks to help rangatahi transition into further education, training, or employment. This role is a part of a collective team, marae-based supporting tikanga and Kaupapa Māori based activities integrating as a wider marae community.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with rangatahi and their whānau, supporting their educational and career aspirations.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including schools, MoE, Oranga Tamariki, Te Kooti Rangatahi, NZ Police and marae community.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans, workshops, and group learning sessions focused on life skills, work readiness, and cultural identity.
  • Use a strengths-based approach to tailor individual education and career pathways.
  • Connect rangatahi with industry networks, employers, and training providers to create sustainable employment and education opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records of rangatahi progress and ensure compliance with funding and service contracts.
  • Actively participate in marae events, powhiri, and kaupapa Māori initiatives.

Skills and Experience

  • Full driver’s licence required.
  • ​Registered Teacher status preferred, with at least 2 years’ experience in teaching, youth work, career coaching, or community engagement.
  • Strong understanding of kaupapa Māori education and experience incorporating Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori into learning.
  • Knowledge of career pathways, industry needs, and employment trends in New Zealand. Excellent facilitation, mentoring, and relationship-building skills.

  • Familiarity with Whānau Ora and community development models.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and case management software.
